What to Look Out For in a Sanctuary

A few warning signs when you consider which sanctuary you want to visit.

An ethical sanctuary:

  • The elephants have lots of space to freely roam around. Elephants need to have time to socialize, rest, and relax.

  • The Mahouts (who train the elephants) seem happy. If they appear to be tired or overworked, the elephants are probably feeling the same way.

  • The elephants have access to shade from the sun. The elephants should be able to find shade in their habitat so that they don't suffer from sunburn, back blisters, or dehydration.

An unethical sanctuary:

  • A business is not ethical just because they use the word "sanctuary" or "refuge." Do your research and do not rely just on the title as it is often misleading and used to as clever advertising to trick tourists.

  • Elephants performing unnatural acts. Elephants should never have to do anything for human pleasure. You should never bathe them, ride them, or watch them perform tricks.
